A Pregnant Domestic Abuse Survivor's Journey with Homefinder UK - "There Is Someone Who Wants to Help"

07/04/2025

According to data from Women’s Aid’s OnTrack system, which tracks outcomes for survivors of domestic abuse, 6.1% of women experiencing domestic abuse were pregnant at the time, and 61.5% had children

These statistics highlight the significant prevalence of domestic violence in society and underscore the urgent need for robust support systems to help vulnerable individuals and their families escape abusive situations and rebuild their lives.

A Powerful Story of Overcoming Domestic Abuse

An excerpt from the applicants case manager at Homefinder UK

"When Sophia* first contacted Homefinder UK, she was in a distressing situation. She had fled domestic abuse, leaving behind everything familiar to protect herself. It was only after escaping that she discovered she was pregnant- a revelation that added another layer of urgency and emotion to her already challenging situation. Alone in a county she was still trying to navigate, she faced overwhelming uncertainty. The temporary accommodation she was placed in, provided a roof over her head, but offered little in terms of security and stability, which she desperately needed.

Sophia’s journey was one of immense bravery. Having already endured so much, she remained determined to create a safe and nurturing home for her child. Despite a few language barriers, cultural differences, and the emotional toll of her experiences, she took every necessary step to secure her future.

Understanding the urgency of her situation, Homefinder UK worked closely with her Local Authority to ensure she was placed in permanent social housing as quickly as possible. Within weeks of her referral, she moved into a safe, stable home, one where she could begin to rebuild her life with dignity and hope.

Sophia’s resilience was truly remarkable. She actively engaged with support services, learning about her rights, accessing maternity care, and connecting with community organisations that could help her adjust to this new chapter. She refused to let her past define her future, and her strength in doing so was truly inspiring.

Recognising the additional challenge of preparing for motherhood with limited resources, Homefinder UK also helped Sophia access financial assistance for essential baby items.

We know that Sophia’s story is not unique. Too many women fleeing abuse – especially those new to the UK – face significant barriers in finding a secure place to live. Many endure extended stays in temporary accommodation, struggling with feelings of isolation, fear and uncertainty. Homefinder UK is committed to changing that. Our mission is not just about providing housing; it’s about restoring dignity, offering hope, and ensuring that no one feels alone in their fight for safety and stability."
